SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
Materials used in the production of shipping tags shall be made in accordance with the physical requirements specified below:

The following tests shall be used to determine conformity with these requirements: tearing strength shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D-1424; thread count in accordance with ASTM D-3775; and thickness in accordance with ASTM D-1777.
The tags shall be strung with ties, as specified in the contract or order, of at least 12 inches of tinned, annealed or galvanized tag wire not less than 0.025 inch in diameter with a minimum tensile strength of 18 lbs., or 12 inches of twine conforming to the materials characteristics in Table II:

ASTM test method D-2256- configuration A, condition 1, shall be used to determine conformity of the twine ties to the requirements of this CID. The tensile strength of the wire ties shall be tested in accordance with ASTM method E-8.
The wire, twine or polypropylene shall be formed into a loop with even ends, passed through the eyelet of the tag, back through the loop, and tightened. Wire ties are to be secured by twisting and shall have ends of equal length.
The tags shall be furnished with a 7/32 + 1/32 inch hole diameter, reinforced with a paper patch firmly attached to each surface and may be further reinforced with a non-corrosive metal eyelet, when specified. The hole is to be centered, and no more than 3/4 inch from the tying end.
Color, shape (square-rectangular), and dimensions (length and width) of the tags shall be as specified. A tolerance of + 1/16 inch shall be permitted for the dimensions of the tags.
