COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SEALS, STRAPPING (HEAVY DUTY, STEEL, FLAT)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use
of this commercial item description in preference to Federal
Specification QQ-S-781, Seals.
This description covers steel strapping seals.
Salient characteristics.
The heavy duty steel strapping seals shall be supplied in the following duty, joint styles, grades, finishes, sizes (width and thickness), and strengths:

Standard grade – For hand operated tensioning and sealing
Automatic power machine grade – For power machine with automatic feed.

Strengths
The seals shall be designed to have a strength based on the seal type (shown below), joint type (notch or crimp) and duty (heavy) (see table I). Notch and crimp joints style shall be single, double, or triple. The length of a seal shall be compatible with the joint style and design. For single notch and crimp seals, the seal strength shall be 40 percent of strapping breaking strength and double and triple notch or crimp seals shall have a seal strength equal to 75 percent of the strapping breaking strength when the seal is properly applied to the strapping and tested in accordance with ASTM E8.

Workmanship. Seals shall be free of burrs or slivers. Seals shall be straight, smooth and clean and shall be free from cracks, grooves, waves, edge curvature, indentations, and excessive oils.
Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
Note. Purchaser should specify strapping size design for grade, finish, and seal type, and joint style.
This commercial item description supersedes in part, A-A-800, dated May 13, 1980. A-A-800 is being revised to reflect changes.
