VERMICULITE, ABSORBENT
(FOR PACKAGING LIQUID HAZARDOUS MATERIALS)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description for
all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This Commercial Item Description (CID) covers expanded or exfoliated vermiculite to
be used for the absorbent packaging of liquid hazardous materials (HAZMAT).
2. CLASSIFICATION. The vermiculite shall conform to the density and grading of ASTM C516,
Standard Specification for Insulation, Thermal, Loose Fill, Vermiculite.
2.1 Type.
Type I - Vermiculite loose fill insulation
2.2 Grade.
Grade 3 - Fine
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Characteristics. The vermiculite shall be dry, nonwetted, untreated, nonabrasive, and free from
any additives or surfactants.
